Who I Am
My name is Alison Brooks
I am a credentialed, experienced classroom teacher turned homeschool teacher and tutor of writing, grammar, and literature. My students range from elementary to high school.
After earning my Master's and teaching in the public school system, I sought opportunities in which I could dedicate more time and attention to a smaller number of students.
In addition to private tutoring, I currently teach small weekly classes to homeschool students through a learning community in Orange County, CA.
My greatest joy and purpose as a teacher is guiding students to think independently, to grapple with meaningful questions, and to form their own conclusions—all to help them achieve an enriched experience of life and an expanded outlook on the world.
I attribute my students’ progress to holding high standards and having clear expectations on the foundation of a supportive, caring relationship with each child.
I pride myself on being deliberate and reflective, and I look forward to improving my teaching skills every day. I hope to make a positive contribution toward your child's education. I look forward to meeting you!

Former Student
Arvada, CO
You were an amazing teacher last year, and helped me find a spark for ELA. The way you taught was easier for me to understand, and, to me, was simpler. One of the best.
Former Student

You approach your students with such genuine kindness and for that I am so thankful.

Influences & Inspirations

Changing Attitudes
"Before students can be motivated to alter their attitudes, they must first understand which ones are beneficial and which create obstacles to their success and personal fulfillment...The strategy for dealing with attitudes is to (1) determine the specific attitudes that impede student learning in your course, (2) express the attitudes as beliefs, and (3) guide students in analyzing the beliefs and reaching conclusions that reflect both the principles of logic and the students' own experience."

Between Parent and Child
"Communication with children should be based on respect and on skill; it requires (a) that messages preserve the child's as well as the parent's self-respect; and (b) that statements of understanding precede statements of advice or instruction...When children are in the midst of strong emotions, they cannot listen to anyone. They cannot accept advice or consolation or constructive criticism. They want us to understand what is going on inside them, what they are feeling at that particular moment."

Educational Wastelands
"Our civilization requires of every man and woman a variety of complex skills which rest upon the ability to read [and write...] These forms of knowledge are not mere preparation for more advanced study. They are invaluable in their own right. The student bound for college must have them, of course. But so must the high school student who does not intend to enter college. Indeed, his is the graver loss if the high school fails to give adequate training in these fundamental ways of thinking, for he can scarcely hope to acquire thereafter the intellectual skills of which he has been defrauded."

Rex Barks
"Rex Barks shows us that the value of diagramming lies...in its presentation of a systematic method of identifying the relationships among words in a sentence. To any student who has studied this book and is struggling to identify the function of a word, you need only say, 'Picture the diagram!'" (Foreword by Lisa VanDamme).

Teaching Johnny to Think
"With each new point or each new subject, the child must be getting another example of: 'This is how to think. This is what is involved. This is what the mind should be doing.' [...] Teaching is a form of communicating thinking. After countless examples of good communication of thinking, it becomes very easy to abstract the common denominators, at which point the student can become an independent thinker."

Collier's Junior Classics Series
"We are children only once, and then only for a few brief years. But these are the most impressionable years of a lifetime. Never again will the world and everything in it be so eternally new, so filled with wonder. Never again will physical, mental, spiritual growth be so natural and unavoidable. During these years, habits become ingrained, tastes are developed, personality takes form. The child's whole being is geared toward learning. He instinctively reaches out for truth and, having no prejudices, seizes upon that which is good, just, beautiful. For these reasons, a child deserves what Walter de la Mare has called 'only the rarest kind of best.' What is best in a book for children? Best books reflect universal truths with clarity and artistry. Such books reveal that man is essentially good and that life is infinitely worth living. They do not deny the existence of evil, but rather emphasize man's thrilling struggle against evil through faith, courage, and perseverance. They awaken the young reader's imagination, call forth his laughter as well as his tears, help him understand and to love his fellow man. The reading of such books constitutes a rich heritage of experience which is every child's birthright."
